Welcome to Ms. Amy's Class

Individualized Curriculum

Are you looking for individualized tutoring from a highly experienced educator? Look no further. I specialize in individualized curriculum development, identifying then addressing areas of your child's greatest need. I am Orton-Gillingham trained at the Academy Associate Level, continuing to work under the mentorship of a Fellow. I am also a certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Interventionist through the Center for Effective Reading Instruction (CERI).  For math, I follow my training in Montessori (AMI and AMS) to provide hands-on materials to aid in understanding. While I am thoroughly trained in well-established educational philosophies, I am also flexible and creative in my teaching methods, keeping student understanding and success at the forefront of my goals. Consistent tutoring support is one thing you can count on in times like these.

Direct Literacy Instruction

For those with or without dyslexia

Direct Literacy instruction is for students of any age who struggle with reading, spelling, and writing. By following the Orton-Gillingham Approach, I teach students the rules of English in a multi-sensory, structured, and logical manner. I tailor each lesson specifically to each student each time. I continually assess each student's comprehension, slowing down when needed and moving forward when a concept is understood. I write each individual lesson after each session, incorporating any mistakes in the next lesson as a review. This approach sets students up for success.

$75/session which includes 55 minutes of tutoring and an individualized lesson plan that I write specifically for each student, each time.

Informal Assessments

Identifying Specific Areas of Challenge.

I perform informal literacy assessments that help identify specific learning challenges in the areas of:

  • Phonemic Awareness

  • Letter and Word Recognition

  • Reading Fluency and Comprehension

  • Handwriting

  • Spelling

  • Writing Skills

I include a detailed report that can be shared with teachers, which outlines my findings. Teachers and parents have found the reports helpful when designing targeted supports for struggling students.

$150 for the testing (which takes about an hour) and the written report.

Parent Testimonials

"Amy has masterfully guided our son (now 8) into literacy—  which is in and of itself incredible and exciting— but I’d say in this area of work arriving at the destination (while major!) is less impressive than how you get there.  Amy’s approach (custom-tailored all the way down to the finest detail) combines great expertise, warmth, and kindness with firm expectation and boundaries, all while keeping our child interested and engaged, feeling positive, and intrinsically motivated.  This high-level approach to teaching and navigating a social-emotional relationship with a child in a one-on-one setting is exceptional and uncommon and one which we continue to value very highly. We comment on it all the time, how lucky we feel to have this resource on Maui— and we continue our regular sessions now despite having reached the literacy goals we set when we started with Amy two years ago. If you’re considering Amy’s services and you’d like to chat, I’m happy to share our experience/context in more detail, please just request my contact from Amy."
